Christopher Charles True, 37, was charged with robbing Ryan Maurice Rancourt by assaulting him with the intent to steal from him, and committing aggravated assault on Rancourt by “wounding, maiming or disfiguring” him on Halloween on Dominion Street in Moncton.

True eventually pleaded not guilty and his trial was set for three days in Moncton provincial court starting Wednesday.

The accused appeared in the prisoner’s dock with defence lawyer Brian Murphy and changed his plea at the start of the trial. He admitted the aggravated assault and the Crown will withdraw the robbery charge at sentencing.

The court ordered a victim impact statement and pre-sentence report and sentencing will happen July 10. True has been in jail since the incident and will remain there until sentencing.
